Columbia County Sheriff’s Office using Mobile Radar trailers to crack down on speeders
MARTINEZ, Ga. – Columbia County deputies are cracking down on drivers with a lead foot.
They’re mechanical eyes for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office which are clocking you as you move along certain roads.
“We can download them and get the info we need. How many vehicles came through, were they speeding, is it one individual, is it a problem,” said Sgt. AJ Lyons with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Enforcement Unit.
They are called Mobile Radar Trailers. Lyons says there are four spread throughout the county to make sure you keep it slow and steady.
“Whenever we get a complaint of speeding, reckless driving, we’ll augment our force by sticking these out,” said Lyons.
NBC 26 found one in Petersburg Station and while we were there we also found drivers with their pedal a little too close to the metal. Lyons says if you’re going to be driving through neighborhoods, you need to keep your eye on the speedometer and still be aware of what’s around you.
“Because there are kids playing, like you said, and kids don’t stop and think and we see kids run out of the road. Slow down a little bit, take an extra minute, don’t drive distracted,” said Lyons.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says if you see speeding in your neighborhood, give them a call and they will work on placing a mobile radar trailer on a street near you.
